Respect Education in Mindanao: Teachers Training

The Integrated Mindanaons Association for Natives with the invitation of the MinCoNSP (Mindanao Convergence on Social Protection) participated in the Teacher’s training last April 20-25, 2014 at the Mountain Lake Eco Resort in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. The training was conducted by the Respect Education Foundation of the Netherlands in collaboration with the Department of Education Region XII and Cordaid Netherlands.

The IMAN participants includes the IMAN facilitators and Staffs, District Supervisor of Maguindanao, Hon. Delia e. Daniel, Kabacan West District Supervisor, Hon. Efrin Mantawil, School Principals, Teachers in charge and respected Grade 4 and Grade 5 teachers of Pedtad, Buluan, Siento trenta, Batungkayo, Pagagawan and Nangaan Elementary School.

The Respect Education programme aims to improve quality of education by creating a learning environment where every child feels safe, accepted and is able to fully develop him/herself. The program is based on the concepts of Adaptive learning, Cooperative learning and Multiple Intelligences and contributes to the child centered approach of the K to 12 education curriculum. It promotes the development of 21st century skills such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication. Children from different ethnic groups and backgrounds learn to understand and respect each other which contribute to peace. The also include psycho-social component called PREPARE that will address possible trauma’s affecting the children due to the conflict.

The trainers were Mr. Dolf Hautvast, Mrs. Femke van der Ster form the Respect Education Netherlands and Prof. Rogier van’t Rood of the University of Maastrich Netherlands. They deliver the topics in a very relax way wherein participants can relate well. Moreover, the training focuses more on personal experiences, understanding and professional attitude towards different children behaviors.
